Here's your "Choose Your Stupid News" story of the day! (11/20/09)
SACRED STASH!
This woman either has a lot of faith, or not a lot of common sense. The woman in Maryland left $40,000 worth of coins near a Catholic shrine so the Virgin Mary could watch over her savings while she was out of town. A groundskeeper at National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes found the two plastic freezer bags filled with gold and silver while raking leaves, and shrine operators thought they had been blessed with a massive donation. But at Sunday Mass, six days after the discovery, the woman approached the Shrine Director William Tronolone and asked if anyone had found the money. She told Tronolone she had left the money there for safekeeping and evidently it worked because they were able to return the coins to her. It may not be as holy, but next time a safety deposit box will do the job just fine!

GATES DETAILS PLANS FOR PENTAGON PROBE ON FT. HOOD
Defense Secretary Robert Gates unveiled details yesterday of the Pentagon probe examining the circumstances leading to the Fort Hood shootings. According to Gates, former Army Secretary Togo West and former Navy chief Vernon Clark will be in charge of the 45-day review, which will look into gaps that might lead the military to overlook members that might be a threat to others. The review also will look at personnel and medical programs, and at how well U.S. bases are able to respond to mass casualty incidents. President Obama has already ordered a review of all intelligence related to Fort Hood gunman Maj. Nidal Hasan. In the latest information yielded by investigators, Hasan seemed worried about the results of an HIV test taken a week before his shooting rampage. While investigators said there was no indication that Hasan was HIV positive, he did have medicine in his home used to treat HIV-positive individuals. Investigators also found that Hasan donated $20,000 to $30,000 a year to overseas Islamic "charities." A number of the charities have been identified as fronts for terror groups.
TEEN ADMITS TO MOLESTING SISTER, IS KILLED BY DAD
A 15-year-old boy in Michigan was shot and killed execution-style by his own father Monday after the teen confessed to molesting his three-year-old sister. The father, 37-year-old Jamar Pinkney Sr., was charged with first degree murder Wednesday and if convicted, he could spend life in prison. Pinkney Sr. allegedly forced his son Jamar Pinkney Jr. to strip his clothes off and kneel in a vacant lot before shooting him in the head with a single bullet as his distraught mother looked on. According to the boy's mother, Lazette Cherry, Pinkney Jr. admitted to having "inappropriate contact" with his three-year-old half sister. When Pinkney Sr. found out, he began by pistol whipping his son in the living room of the house where the teen lived with his mother before taking him outside and killing him.
FAA GLITCH CAUSES NATIONWIDE FLIGHT DELAYS
An FAA computer glitch caused widespread flight cancellations and delays, stranding air travelers nationwide yesterday. The problem lasted about five hours before it was corrected, but it was unclear how long flights would be affected. The problem revolved around flight plans collected by the FAA for traffic nationwide at two computer centers - one in Salt Lake City and the other in the Atlanta area. The computers had stopped entering plans and aviation officials were forced to enter the flight plans by hand. The world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, was particularly affected. The problem also worsened delays caused by bad weather in the Northeast, with airports in the Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York metro areas reporting problems.
ATLANTIS ASTRONAUTS COMPLETE 1ST SPACEWALK
Two astronauts from the space shuttle Atlantis performed the first spacewalk of their mission yesterday. Atlantis crewmen Michael Foreman and Dr. Robert Satcher Jr. installed a spare antenna outside the International Space Station, and also hooked up cables and a handrail, and greased some mechanisms. They performed all their tasks quite swiftly, getting two hours ahead of schedule at one point. Satcher, the first orthopedic surgeon in space, lubricated snares for a robot arm, prompting astronaut Randolph Bresnik to comment, "We have photographic evidence of the highest recorded orthopedic surgery — ever." Two more spacewalks are planned in the next few days to complete space station maintenance and get the outpost ready for the next shuttle visitors. Atlantis will remain at the space station until Wednesday.
REPORT: 14 PERCENT OF HOMEOWNERS IN TROUBLE
According to a new report Thursday, more than 14 percent of American homeowners with a mortgage were either behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of September. It's a record-high number that could threaten economic recovery. The Mortgage Bankers Association's report suggests that recovery could be thwarted by the continued increase in home loan defaults. Rising unemployment numbers are now the main reason why homeowners are falling behind on their payments. The hardest-hit states are California, Nevada, Arizona and Florida, which account for 44 percent of new foreclosures in the country. Nearly 13 percent of all loans in Florida were in foreclosure, the highest in the U.S.
