The B-52s’ scheduled performance at the Retro C Trop Festival in Tilloloy, France, was canceled after a tornado struck the festival site shortly before the band was expected to perform.
The severe weather forced an evacuation and caused major damage at the venue, including collapsed scaffolding and destroyed stage equipment. Public reception areas were also damaged, leading organizers to cancel the final day of the festival.
Frontman Fred Schneider later described the situation as a total disaster. He said lightning had already been seen before the band’s crew was still asked to prepare the stage, and that a short delay kept the group from being onstage when the worst of the storm hit.
